Recent Blizzard A Costly One In Maryland
(Annapolis, MD) -- Officially, winter is just beginning and the money Maryland set aside for snow removal is already gone. The State Highway Administration has spent 27-million dollars on snow removal since November. But only 26-million dollars had been budgeted for the whole winter. Twenty-million dollars has been spent just since Friday. "The Washington Post" says the state's other transportation agencies spent another seven-million dollars to clear snow from bridges and tunnels, train stations, toll plazas, and airports. Additional costs will also be rung up associated with activating the National Guard and replenishing salt domes and other supplies before the next storm comes, whenever that may be. So far 74-thousand pounds of salt has been used -- almost a quarter of the state's supply.
